Edinburgh locals with seasonal allergies are set to face a challenging week ahead as the Met Office predicts a rare “very high” pollen count on Thursday.
Those with hay fever are no stranger to being forced indoors and closing their windows to avoid airborne pollen. However, the Met Office forecast shows it could be another tricky week for those with the allergy, with consistently high pollen across the week and a spike on Thursday.
The week from Monday, July 4, is also set for a summer heatwave, with temperatures consistently reaching into the low 20 degrees across the city. However, with that comes a high pollen count across the week that will likely force those with hay fever inside.

The published pollen count from Monday until Friday shows that there will be high pollen every day except Thursday. On Thursday, the prediction is set to climb as the the Met Office forecasts a rare very high pollen count.
According to The Met Office, the highest levels of pollen currently around are from grasses and nettles, although there is also some tree pollen. Grass, weed and tree pollen are three of the most common kinds of pollen to affect peoples allergies.
The reported “very high” pollen count won’t just affect Edinburgh. The Met Office predicts similarly high levels across Strathclyde, the North of England, Yorkshire, the Midlands and Wales.
This is hardly the first time in the past few months that Edinburgh locals have been forced indoors to shelter from seasonal allergies. At the start of June, locals were warned of a major pollen bomb over the course of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Met Office issued another red pollen warning on June 22.
Despite the high pollen count, temperatures are set to stay high throughout the week, reaching into the low 20s from Wednesday until Sunday. However, the Met Office still warns of some showers and for the weather to feel cool thanks to a brisk westerly wind.
