Edinburgh vegan supermarket say 'it wasn't meant to be' as they announce sad closure

A plant-based grocery store in Edinburgh has been forced to close just one and a half years after opening.

Easter Greens have placed a note in the window of their store on Morningside Road, informing customers of their closure in the next few weeks, saying that after one and a half years, "it wasn't meant to be."

The store, at 179 Morningside Road, is the biggest out of the two stores in the capital, the other being on Easter Road, that will continue to trade when Morningside closes.

The store opened during the pandemic and combined a range of over 1000 vegan products, as well as introducing dry food refills such as rice, lentils and muesli, breads and pastries from local vegan bakery, Breadwinner.

The group also sell a wide range of toiletries, chocolates, snacks and much more, as the demand for plastic-free and vegan products sky-rocketed in the last few years.

Located in one of the capital's most well-known areas, Easter Greens have struggled to kick on from their initial success, with the store on Easter Road remaining open to customers in the Leith area.

Multiple passers-by noticed the sign on the door of the Morningside Road store over the weekend, with it starting off: "Goodbye Morningside."

It continued: "We've enjoyed getting to know you over the last one and a half years but sadly it wasn't meant to be. Our last day will be Friday, June 17. You can still find us at our other store: 4 Easter Road, EH7 5RG."

Easter Greens in Leith will continue to sell fan-favourites such as fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh bread by sourdough specialists Kvasa, cheese alternatives, yoghurts, frozen pizza, tea and coffee and much more.

When the shop opened in August 2019, it was the country's only 100% vegan-only grocery store.
