The inferno was captured by concerned onlookers from the top of a Lothian bus travelling down the street packed with traffic.

Ben Arthur, who was on the bus as it approached the location of the van on fire, said: "The bus was detoured via Balcarres Street, so I did not see too much.

He said that "when the firefighters started work on it the whole street instantly filled with smoke and steam" and "the bus driver did a great job keeping everyone safe".

There were concerns from the public as the fire broke out close to a number of schools in the area including George Watson's and South Morningside Primary School about the time pupils may be commuting home from school but the fire services were able to control the situation quickly.

The Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to Edinburgh Live that a van was on fire and two appliances attended the incident which is now under control.
