Edinburgh train passengers facing huge delays as car crashes into rail bridge

Train passengers travelling between Edinburgh and Newcastle are facing major delays on Tuesday after a car crashed into a rail bridge.

According to LNER, the incident happened between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed, with the northbound line affected. National Rail suggested delays could be expected until 1.30pm.

The train service has recommended checking your service ahead of travel, with delays expected.

LNER tweeted: " #LNERUpdate Due to a road vehicle colliding with a bridge between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh the Northbound line between these stations is blocked. Train services running through these stations may be delayed. Check your journey."

National Rail added: "A vehicle has struck a bridge between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh and this is causing disruption to journeys running through these stations. As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 40 minutes."

Jo Parker, who has been left waiting in Dunbar to get to Edinburgh, said: "About 15 mins ago announced on @LNER 11.40 from Dunbar to Edinburgh that trains will be held up due to a vehicle hitting a bridge and are stuck until engineers have inspected bridge.

"Just been informed at LEAST another 45mins here." The number of people, or the condition of those involved, is unknown.
