Edinburgh street beside famous landmark covered in mountain of fly-tipped junk

An Edinburgh street, beside one of the city's most famous landmarks, was left covered in a mountain of rubbish on Thursday.

Locals took to social media to vent their fury after spotting the fly-tipped mess, that had begun to pile-up at the start of the week.

The leader of Edinburgh Council was dragged into the row on social media after the mess, on Calton Road, was reported by irate residents.

The area is a well-known spot for both locals and tourists - and a popular commute for residents travelling to work in the morning.

Various images were shared on social media on Thursday morning, by locals complaining about the heap of rubbish bags and other waste, that has apparently been lying there since Monday.

Four black general waste bins on the side of the road are overflowing and a mountain of waste bags and cardboard has been left next to the bins.

An old television has also been dumped at the top of the pile.

The leader of Edinburgh Council, Adam McVey waded in after being tagged on Twitter. He added: "Don't know why this has built up in this way but I've also followed up with senor officers to action now."

The Edinburgh Council help account on Twitter replied to the post, saying that the issue had been reported on Wednesday, March 2, and is due to be collected tomorrow.

McVey hit back with: "The team should be there this morning to clear, thanks."

Various other passers-by reported the issue via social media, one saying that a horrible smell was starting to originate from the pile and that it should be cleared immediately.

One said: "Street hygience SOS Calton Road, it's been like this since Monday."

Another added: "Hi, rubbish is piling up ans getting very smelly on Calton Road, just near the station. Anything you can do to get this sorted now?"

The area at which the rubbish has been dumped is also known for being included in Irvine Welsh' Trainspotting, with the famous steps onto the road and archway just outside Waverley Station being included in the iconic movie.

Since the issue was reported again this morning, the City of Edinburgh Council confirmed that the rubbish has since been cleared.

A Council spokesperson said: “Our hard-working refuse collection staff continue to provide a service despite challenging circumstances. Unfortunately, these communal bins were missed, and the issue was exacerbated by dumped trade waste.

“The service visited the site to clear it on Thursday morning, and have carried out additional cleansing in the area. We’re also investigating the issue of trade waste here.”
