Edinburgh shop 'locked in by tram works' as construction on new line continues

An Edinburgh shop has said they have been 'locked in' by the ongoing tram works in Leith.

With construction still ongoing on the major project to extend the current line down to Newhaven, work has caused disruption to a number of businesses.

In a desperate plea to customers this week, arts and textiles store Logan Malloch said the extension had been a huge "hurdle" for themselves and many others on Leith Walk.

The final stages of the works are due to be completed in 2023, with the diversions and blockages on Leith Walk hoped to be eased in the coming months.

However, speaking on social media, Logan Malloch said they had been "locked in" by the fences and construction zones, and asked locals to make the effort to support them.

Sharing images of the disruption and fencing outside their shop front, staff said:

"Normally here at @logan_malloch we like to stay positive and you know we have survived all the hurdles that have been in our way (of which there have been many)… but the tram works are a rather big hurdle even for us.

"We know find ourselves locked into a little island, losing a lot of foot fall and any clear way for people to access us easily… so to get to us we have shown you by the arrows on the map, and we are the pin in the map, so come and find us… we love you for it

"This is set to be going on till September, four months away.

"As soon as the road works started on Leith Walk, it started affecting all the businesses, drip by drip… as its comes outside each shop, it hits hard, after the constant drips… so please, please continue to support all us small businesses in Leith and all areas affected by the tram works it dose mean so much to us.

"So please remember we are still here and think of us when you need your small independent shop fix."

Speaking to a number of Leith Walk businesses last year, many owners told Edinburgh Live the tram works had caused a "devastating" impact on their income, in addition to the pandemic.

However, in response to the claims, the council recognised the period had been "extremely challenging" for traders, and explained they were offering a number of support schemes to keep businesses afloat.
