Edinburgh sci-fi con will see guests step into Game of Thrones and Star Wars

An event bringing the best of sci-fi to Edinburgh is descending on the city for two days of fun.

Now in its eighth year, the Capital Sci-Fi Con is coming to the O2 Academy - bringing ‘fun-filled, family-friendly, fan-focused festivities’. Held on February 11 and 12, the event gives 100 per cent of profits to the Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).

To date, Capital Sci-Fi Con has raised over £337,000 for CHAS. Over the two days visitors can see celebrities, head to panel talks, do photoshoots and check out some prop displays.

A dedicated area of the O2 Academy will be set out for celebrity guests for autographs and selfies. Stars include James Cosmo from Game of Thrones, Bernard Hill from Lord of the Rings, and Angus MacInnes from Star Wars.

Fans of the much-loved CBBC game show Raven are also in for a treat, with James MacKenzie - who hosted the show - set to attend and host a panel talk.

A spokesperson for Capital Sci-Fi Con said: “Step into another world with over 100 trader stalls, your favourite characters, movie props, celebrity guests, cosplay competitions and panel talks.

“Meet amazing guests from all of your favourite sci-fi movies, including Darth Vader, Chewbacca and more. There's a bit of everything from Harry Potter to Game of Thrones, Star Wars to Marvel to get involved with.

“Browse the incredible trader stalls, meet comic artists and writers and get involved in competitions. Dressing up as your favourite character is highly encouraged of course, with prizes for the best costume.

“Capital Sci Fi Con is organised by a small committee of volunteers who give up their time to make sure that each event is full of fun, geeky content that the whole family can enjoy. Alongside the committee, we have a team of 170 fundraising volunteers called the Causeplayers who help raise money at events and raise the profile of CHAS and Capital Sci Fi Con while also cosplaying.”

A spokesperson for CHAS added: “For thirty years CHAS has been offering a full family support service for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions.

“This includes palliative care, family respite and support – through our hospices, homecare services and hospital presence. We support families through the terrifying heartbreak of knowing their child may die young.

“With love and compassion, we offer highly personalised care in hospice, hospital and home. We make things possible so children have the freedom to be themselves, play outside, laugh, sparkle, smile, and have treasured moments of joy.

“We are there when needed most – in really tough days, at the end of life, and after a child dies.”
