After a hard week at work, it's always nice to sit down and put your feet up after a long day. And to make it even better, a takeaway is always a good option.
But when it comes to picking what food you want, it can be a battle and a half to say the least with Edinburgh's food scene constantly expanding. Not that we're complaining, of course.
From a Chinese to an Indian, there's many directions to go in. But one that seems to top the list is good old fish and chips.

According to a recent survey by Jackpotjoy, Goggle search results for the best fish and chip shops have been soaring with over 200,000 people asking the all important question. It also shows that search for this topic has increased by 172% since March alone.
So it's no surprise that costal cities - including Edinburgh - have been among those loving the takeaway option. With the popular option on the rise, this means it has beaten other UK favourites including Indian, Chinese, Thai and even Pizza.
When looking into specifics, it seems one order came out on top with the nation keeping it simple with six in 10 of us choosing to eat battered cod and chips with salt and vinegar, of course. In second place came battered haddock with a third (33 per cent) of the votes with 26 per cent of fish and chip lovers opting for a battered sausage.
And whilst us Scots clearly love to deep fry our food, the iconic deep fried Mars Bar only got the approval of two people from 100. And whilst we know the top three orders, the survey also revealed the top 10 orders as well as our favourite toppings.
The nation’s top ten chippie orders
- Battered cod - 60 per cent
- Battered haddock- 33 per cent
- Battered sausage - 26 per cent
- Sausage - 20 per cent
- Fish cake - 15 per cent
- Donner kebab - 14 per cent
- Steak pie - 13 per cent
- Chicken burger - 11 per cent
- Battered chicken - 10 per cent
- Scampi - 10 per cent
The nation’s top five chip toppings
- Salt and vinegar – 44 per cent
- Just salt – 12 per cent
- Ketchup – 8 per cent
- Curry sauce – 8 per cent
- Mayonnaise or just vinegar – 5 per cent
Whilst the classic combo of salt and vinegar unsurprisingly took the top spot, fans of mushy peas and gravy seem to be few and far between. This comes after only two per cent of people picking these options when surveyed.
Alex Fagelson, Head of Brand at Jackpotjoy said: “Looking at our research, it is clear that people up and down the UK can agree on one thing – there’s nothing better than a chippie tea with salt and vinegar for bringing people together. Keeping things simple and classic is a huge preference!”
