As the city enjoys the warmer months, we’ve raked through the archives to put together some images from summers down the decades.
During its heyday, Portobello was the place to be during the sunny days - which is still where many flock to today. After a large open-air swimming pool and permanent funfair appeared at Portobello, it became an ideal location for spending the summer months.
In 1901, the Portobello Baths were opened overlooking the beach. Portobello Pier was open from 1871 until the start of the First World War.

Also in the area were the Edinburgh Marine Gardens, which included an open-air theatre, an industrial hall, a ballroom, a scenic railway, and a speedway track.
The area fell out of use in the First World War and never fully recovered, though Portobello has remained a summer spot.
Since the 1980s, the amusement arcades and funfair attractions have gradually disappeared. The 21st century saw the emergence of community activities on the Promenade, such as volleyball, kayaking, rowing, a monthly food market and many other attractions.

Last year, Portobello was considered by a Sunday Times panel to be one of the top eight places to live in Scotland.
The coastal neighbourhood of Edinburgh certainly isn’t the only place to enjoy the warmer weather, though a look back at summer over the decades certainly pointed us there. Check out some snaps from back in the day below.
