Edinburgh rugby fans warned as limited transport set to cause chaos at weekend

Edinburgh Rugby fans were warned on Friday that travelling to and from Saturday’s game could be impacted by rail strikes and busy tram lines over the weekend.

Although National Rail Strikes have since been suspended by the RMT Union, travel to and from the game is still expected to be busy and in high demand.

Edinburgh Trams advised that rugby goers purchase tram tickets in advance of travel on Saturday.

The Scotland versus Fiji rugby showdown is happening on Saturday (5 November) at BT Murrayfield Stadium at 1pm, and tram lines are expected to be busier than usual thanks to the now suspended rail disruptions and high demand.

Last Saturday, Scotland faced Australia at BT Murrayfield at 5:30pm, and fans were queuing into the road at 4pm along Princes Street waiting to board busy trams to the stadium.

ScotRail issued this warning to rugby fans on Friday:

“If you're planning to travel to the Scotland v Fiji rugby match tomorrow by train (1pm KO), please be aware that ScotRail services will be significantly impacted by strike action by the RMT trade union. The last services to depart Haymarket station are between 5pm and 5.45pm.”

Although the strikes have since been called off the national RMT Union, ScotRail has yet to issue an update about how local services will be impacted by the recent decision.

Edinburgh Trams usually run from every seven minutes throughout the day, but on Saturday, services will run every three minutes before and after Scotland’s rugby game at Murrayfield.

Edinburgh Tram’s managing director Lea Harrison said:

“Over the next few weeks, people will be thrilled to see one of the most exciting and dramatic annual competitions in world rugby, and we want to make it as easy as possible to access the stadium that’s right next to the tram stop.

“Surely, roads around the city will be extremely busy, but those driving from beyond Edinburgh can avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot in the city centre by leaving their cars at Ingliston Park & Ride before completing their journey by tram.”

Edinburgh Tram advance sale return tickets are starting from £3.40 for adults and £1.80 for children.

BT Murrayfield Stadium is a 20-30 minute walk from Edinburgh’s Haymarket Train Station.
