ROADS will close in Edinburgh on Tuesday afternoon to allow for the Queen's coffin to be taken to Edinburgh Airport ahead of a flight to London.
The coffin - which remained in St Giles' Cathedral overnight - will be moved at 5pm along the Royal Mile before travelling down Johnstone Terrace and onto Lothian Road, Queensferry Street, Dean Bridge, and Queensferry Road before arriving at the airport.
Between 4pm and 6.30pm these roads will be shut and the City of Edinburgh Council has warned of "extensive closures and diversions of adjoining roads, including all crossover junctions".
It is also expected there will be major disruption on the M8 and City Bypass.
The Scottish Government said it is working with the City of Edinburgh Council, Transport Scotland, Police Scotland, ScotRail and other partners to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, but lengthy delays are expected.
People are being asked to work from home if they can, and those not wishing to pay their respects in person are being asked to avoid any non-essential travel.
Some schools in Edinburgh will also be impacted and close earlier.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney said: “This will be an extremely busy time in Edinburgh as members of the public come to pay their final respects. In light of this, we respectfully ask people to avoid non-essential travel if possible.
“Those wishing to line the route should plan ahead taking into consideration local road closures, allowing for extra time and limited facilities. Prepare for long periods of standing and large crowds. Check the weather before you leave and bring water."
At 6pm the coffin will depart Edinburgh Airport accompanied by the Princess Anne.
At just before 7pm it will arrive at RAF Northolt in west London and from there, it will be taken to Buckingham Palace in a state hearse.
Meanwhile, the King and Queen Consort will fly to Belfast for a series of engagements, including meeting political leaders at Hillsborough Castle, a service at St Anne’s Cathedral, and a walkabout at Writers’ Square.
