A recent Twitter thread has highlighted how much certain areas and streets in Edinburgh have changed over a span of 120 years.
Posted by Trundlesbot, the images show how the city has evolved since the turn of the 19th-century to the present day.
What is most surprising is the appearance of more trees and the changing skyline as well as architectural surroundings.

All of the original photos were taken in 1900 and we have scoured Google Street View in order to show how the area has changed by looking from a similar perspective.
The first image shows Holyrood Park with Arthur’s Seat in the background in 1900. The surrounding area looks rather barren with a limited amount of trees.
Fast forward to present day and the area looks to be a lot more green and pedestrianised.
The second image is of South Bridge and it shows the road with tram tracks in the centre of it in 1900.
It shows a completely different landscape with horse drawn wagons and carts dotted across the street.
Residents of the capital can also be seen in clothing from the time and shop front covers are hanging over sections of the pavement.
The street has completely changed over the last century as the tram tracks are no longer in place and cars can be seen replacing the old school horse and cart.
The third picture is of the Grassmarket which in 1900 was a vast space covered with cobbles and sparsely populated by residents.
The lamp posts look as though they are from a bygone era and everyone is wearing the traditional clothes of the time as they walk alongside horse and carts in the open space.
A White Hotel building can be seen on the left hand side which sits opposite where the Apex Hotels sit during the present day.
There is little vegetation and the area looks as if it is a concrete landscape.
In 2023 the Grassmarket has completely changed with students and tourists littering the popular destination.
The street now is filled with restaurants, bars and hotels and has been mostly pedestrianised on the left hand side.
What is also telling is the amount of cars that litter the right hand side of the road.
The last photo captures the iconic Vennel that leads down to the Grassmarket whilst overlooking Edinburgh Castle.
It surprisingly has not changed massively however the thoroughfare looks to be more residential back in 1900 than it is today with its large erected walls.
