Edinburgh petrol station's £1.68 per litre charge for fuel is way above national average

A local man was stunned to learn petrol had shot up to £1.68 at an Edinburgh petrol station.

The man posted on Twitter, after he pictured the display at a local Shell petrol station showing that unleaded was priced at 159.9 pence, per litre.

And diesel was even higher, at any eye-watering 168.9 pence, per litre.

A litre of petrol now costs 152.95p on average, and diesel 158.56p, according to UK government figures released this morning.

Fuel prices have increased in recent weeks due to the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

The Daily Mirror reports that Russia is the world’s second-biggest producer of crude oil.

It supplies a third of Europe’s oil, raising fears that supplies could be limited due to the conflict with Ukraine.

Adam Corlett, principal economist at the Resolution Foundation think tank, said: “Britain has stepped out of a global pandemic and straight into a cost of living crisis.

“The tragic conflict in Ukraine is likely to further drive up the price of energy and other goods, and worsen the squeeze on incomes that families across Britain are facing. “
