Edinburgh motorcyclist 'threatened with a blade' by masked riders at 40mph

An Edinburgh man has been left shaken after being threatened as he drove his motorbike by two yobs with a blade.

Rory Pieres was driving his own motorbike along Calder Road when two men pulled up alongside him as they were doing 40mph down the city road. Rory saw them acting threateningly towards him, attempting to pull something, which Rory believes to be a knife, out of their bag and staring him down.

The drivers were described as not wearing helmets, wearing black tracksuits and balaclavas. Rory said they looked to be “staring him down” as they both cruised down the city road.

When he gestured that he was wearing a helmet camera and refusing to back down, the two yobs pulled away down Stevenhouse Drive. At this point, Rory pulled over and phoned the police.

The police made their way to the scene but were unable to find any trace of the riders. This is not the first time Rory has had a run in with youths this year, he has already had a bike stolen this year on the same day he got it back from being fixed.

We spoke to Rory, who said: “Honestly I feel pretty bad about it, I just had a bike stolen on the 10th the same day after getting it back from the garage after it was vandalised in February. I bought the bike in December…

“This is the second bike that's been stolen, and everyone I know that rides has had at the very least encounters with these kinds of people, either a theft or an attempt. Every couple of days I'm seeing people having bikes stolen or damaged and seeing the police being almost powerless about it.

“They don't have the resources to stop it all and I get that, but there's well known places in Edinburgh where these groups operate and I really just wish something would be done. I understand the police are carrying out Operation Soteria and that's a huge step forward, I just hope they continue the effort.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9pm on Saturday, 20 August, police received a report of two men acting suspiciously on a motorbike in the Calder Road area of Edinburgh. Officers attended and there was no trace in the area.

“Police in Edinburgh are committed to identifying and targeting those individuals involved in motorcycle antisocial behaviour and thefts, as part of Operation Soteria.”
