Edinburgh motorcyclist and car driver in stand-off on busy city centre junction

An unimpressed motorcyclist has shared video footage of a tense stand-off with a private hire driver at a busy Edinburgh city centre junction.

The headcam footage captures the moment the driver pulls up alongside the rider at a red light on Hope Street and starts to edge forward.

As the lights change to green, the driver pulls away apparently trying to undertake only for the rider to stand their ground.

A strained stand-off ensures before the driver finally gives way and the motorcyclist is able to continue into Queensferry Street.

As the two vehicles encroach side-to-side, the motorcyclist can be heard yelling "whoa" above the sound of engines.

The footage was uploaded on Sunday night to social media platform Tiktok where the video has gained nearly 500 views in the space of 24 hours.

Pedestrians watched on as the two motors beeped the horns as they battled their way through the street.

The street is located at the West end of Princes Street where traffic is only allowed to travel in a one-way system. However, the driver seemed to be in a rush as he tried to drive past the motorbike on a sharp corner.

The Tiktok user @beledorus uploaded the footage, which was captioned “Noticed this driver coming close to me on my left and slowly moving forward. Since left turn is blocked was wondering where he gonna try to go”

The Highway Code states that “It is often difficult to see motorcyclists and cyclists, especially when they are waiting alongside you, coming up from behind, coming out of or moving off from junctions, at roundabouts, overtaking you or filtering through traffic. Always look out for them before you emerge from a junction; they could be approaching faster than you think.”
