Edinburgh Lothian electric bus breaks down on busy road during trial run

An electric Edinburgh bus broke down in the middle of a busy city centre road during a trial run, reportedly causing heavy traffic in the area.

The blue Lothian Bus was restricting traffic on Bruntsfield Place after reportedly breaking down, as a passer-by captured images of the vehicle stopped awkwardly on one side of the road on Monday afternoon.

It is unclear what service the bus is or if there were any passengers onboard, but picture show it completely empty with two drivers standing at the side of the road.

The break-down reportedly restricted traffic heading from the city centre towards Morningside as cars were unable to pass the bus without moving onto the opposite side of the road.

One passer-by who came across the incident, said: "I don't think it was carrying any passengers as it says trial bus on the front but it had broken down at Bruntsfield Place right next to a bus stop and cars couldn't get past.

"One of the Lothian maintenance vans was quickly on hand to try and get it going but it was still a bit chaotic for traffic for a little while. The way the bus had stopped it wasn't tucked in enough for cars to continue using both sides of the road."

The Wright Electroliner, similar to the one pictured, is the world's "most efficient double deck electric bus" according to the manufacturer and includes features designed to inspire the next wave of electric transport.

They add: "Its seating configuration and capacity are similar to our diesel model, ensuring that neither passenger numbers nor comfort is compromised. With Electroliner, let us make every mile a new sustainability milestone."

In July, Lothian Buses said they were trialling the Electroliner on the service 23's route across Edinburgh, saying it would allow them to get "a feel for the latest technology."

Lothian Buses were approached for comment.
