Edinburgh locals fume after group of 'lazy' people leave rubbish strewn in popular park

Edinburgh locals have hit out after rubbish was left in a popular public park on Sunday night.

Locals fumed after spotting rubbish strewn across Leith Links on Monday morning. Plastic bottles, cans, napkins, and food packets along with used disposable BBQs were left by a group of people who were enjoying the warm weather.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, one Leith local took it upon herself to clean up the mess, resulting in a cut hand from a can.

Edyta Dyta who lives opposite the Links said she regularly cleans up rubbish that has been abandoned. Not only can the trash leave her physically hurt, she also explains how it emotionally hurts her to see how people treat the public park.

She said: "It took me 30 mins alone to clean up after it. It was a large group of people and I think that they cleaned up some of it, because there were empty bags, but they were not left under the bin, but under a tree, which as a consequence of such free food benefited the animals.

"There were soda cans, some of which were cut in half when they were being cleaned up, and I cut my hand because of one of these cans, and I can't imagine what kind of harm it could do to animals."

She bagged up all the rubbish on her own, with help from other locals who gave her a couple of bin bags and placed them next to a public bin.

Edyta added: "This is not the first time I have cleaned up other people's rubbish. I live opposite the park and it is my place of residence for walking my dog and spending my free time.

"It hurts me a lot when people leave their rubbish in such a mess, I don't know if it's the lack of rubbish bins or just people's laziness. I want people to see how it looks and maybe making such situations public will make people change their habits."
