Edinburgh local fumes over cars blocking pavement next to busy shopping centre

An Edinburgh local has hit out after a row of parked cars near a shopping park has obstructed the pavement for wheelchair users and parents with prams.

Pictures from Whitehill Road, adjacent to Fort Kinnaird, show a line of parked cars on the pavement that reportedly sit there from 8am until 5pm and make it "impossible" for people to use the pavement - forcing them onto the road and potentially oncoming traffic.

One furious local, who has reported the issue to both the police and the City of Edinburgh Council, claims someone in front of him using a wheelchair was forced onto the road while he had to squeeze past the parked cars.

He said the police referred him to the council to deal with the obstruction as the road is not marked with double-yellow lines, with the issue understood to be going on for months.

The concerned local, who wishes to remain anonymous, said around 15 cars at a time are taking up the whole pavement and make it impossible for those with prams and buggies to get past. He said: "I have put in more complaints regarding the cars being parked on the pavement near Fort Kinnaird on Whitehill Road as there is a massive obstruction happening everyday causing disabled people, wheelchair users, mums and dads with prams and double prams etc to not be able to safely use the pavement.

"It is designed to keep the public safe and it is forcing them onto the dangerous road where because of cars parked on both sides and parked on corners, it is blocking the field of view. I have phone 101 many times and police have said this is council now I know this is obstruction so police need to deal with that but they fail to they don't do nothing they might come and look at it but they say it's council."

He continued: "I was walking past one day and a guy in front of me using a wheelchair had to go onto the road to get past. I spoke to him and said that he shouldn't have to do that and that I was going to complain about it. So many people just brush it off but I'll just keep phoning and reporting it as they don't care about disabled people or kids."

Police Scotland confirmed the issue lies with the City of Edinburgh Council.

A spokesperson for the City of Edinburgh Council advised that irresponsible driving can be reported to the police and while the council does not yet have the powers to enforce against pavement parking, incorrect parking can be reported to the authority using the online form at: www.edinburgh.gov.uk/incorrectlyparked
