Edinburgh has the worst traffic in the UK according to new research, with travellers losing more time to traffic jams than any other city.
Car insurance company GoShorty carried out the research into the cities with the highest congestion rates using data from the TomTom Congestion Index.
Coming in at number one in the UK, even above London, Edinburgh was found to have a congestion level of 35 per cent. According to the data, 80 hours were lost due to time spent in traffic jams last year.

As stated on the GoShorty website: "Edinburgh is the Scottish capital and the seventh-most populous city in the United Kingdom and also has the busiest roads.
"Throughout 2021, the city’s congestion level was 35%, which is a 3% increase on 2020, yet a 6% decrease on 2019. With the current rate continuing to increase, Edinburgh may retain the busiest roads in the UK."
London was found to be the second worst city in the UK for traffic, with a congestion level of 33 per cent an 75 annual hours lost. Rounding out the top five are Hull, Brighton & Hove, and Bournemouth.
Outside of the UK, GoShorty found that Istanbul in Turkey has the highest levels of congestion in the world, with 142 hours lost annually and a congestion level of 62 per cent.
Following in second and third are Bogota in Colombia and Mumbai in India, with 126 and 121 hours lost annually respectively.
The research also looked into which country had the highest number of Low Emission Zones (LEZs), with Italy coming out on top. The country was found to have 253 zones implemented.
