Edinburgh Hamley's announce sudden closure of St James Quarter toy store

Hamley's toy store at Edinburgh's St James Quarter is set to close after shoppers noticed a shutting down notice in their window.

After less than two years at the capital's £1billion shopping centre, the iconic toy store looks set to close for good having been one of the centre's marquee brands to announce their arrival in the summer of 2021.

Customers on Saturday, January 28, noticed a sign in the window informing them the store would be closing on February 6, leaving fans little time to get their hands on last-minute toys.

It is unclear if the store will entertain a special closing down sale before their final day, but the news is expected to leave many fans disappointed. A reason behind the sudden closure has also not been provided by the company as of yet.

Back in August 2021, Hamley's opened their huge space in St James, much to the approval of kids across the capital. The toy store has been a household name for over 260 years, and gets its famous slogan ‘bringing toys to life’ by encouraging fun and play within their store and offering engaging experiences through their expert toy demonstrators

Hamley's previously occupied a spot in the old Jenners building in the city centre before it closed a number of years ago.

A spokesperson for St James Quarter, said: "We can confirm that Hamleys has taken the decision to close a number of their stores in locations across the UK, including St James Quarter

"We’ve introduced a number of fantastic fashion, food and drink, leisure and beauty destinations to The Quarter over the past few months including Neom, Boss, Coach, Gordon Ramsay Street Burger, EL&N and The Real Greek and we are constantly looking at ways to expand our offer to ensure we continue to provide guests with a world class experience

"We will be making every effort to support those employees who are being released from their Hamleys contracts via our employment and training partners, Fuse .

"Following an extremely successfully Christmas and Sale trading period , where the Quarter enjoyed record breaking footfall , we anticipate that a new retailer will be announced in due course, joining the amazing additions still to come this year."
