Edinburgh Fringe: Comedian Paul Black on how to survive the festival and his must see shows

The Fringe is now well and truly underway, with the festival officially starting this Friday, August 5.

Thousands of shows are set to take place at hundreds of venues across Edinburgh, in all corners of the city, from comedy to cabaret, dance to theatre and more.

And with the festival in full swing, we wanted to share some of the performers' top tips on how to survive and make the most of the madness.

Over the new few days we'll be asking a variety of acts for their recommendations on shows to see, whether they prefer Edinburgh Castle or Edinburgh Zoo and that all important question - salt and vinegar or salt and sauce?

First up is the hugely popular Glasgow comedian Paul Black, who is bringing his Self-Care Era show to the Fringe at the Gilded Balloon at the Museum venue, ever night until August 10.

Glaswegian Paul Black's Fringe show is likely to be one of the most popular this festival (gildedballoon.co.uk)

Here's what Paul had to say:

Pitch your show in 25 words

"It's a 12 step guide on Self Care where I show you when I thought I looked like Morrissey but actually looked like Sue Perkins."

What’s your must-see show are you off to see this year?

"Jack Rooke's Big Boy's and Friends - I loved the show on Channel 4 and I'm buzzing to see what he's got planned. There are so many shows, it's a bit overwhelming but definitely excited for Susan Riddle and Frankie Boyle.

"I'll try and cram as many in as I can.

"Paul Black's Self Care Era as well, I'll be at that every night."

Top tip for a Fringe virgin

"See as many shows as humanly possible. There's loads of free stuff as well if your skint and fancy a night out.

"Get a Civerinos pizza, then get the train to Glasgow."

Edinburgh Castle or Edinburgh Zoo

"Edinburgh Castle definitely, I got spat on by a giraffe when I was a child at Edinburgh Zoo and haven't been back.

"Kylie Minogue did a gig at Edinburgh Castle and as far as I'm aware has never headlined Edinburgh Zoo and I trust her judgement."

Salt and vinegar or salt and sauce on your chips?

"I don't want to betray my Glaswegian roots but salt and sauce is class so I will side with the east coast on this one. Not a vinegar Stan unfortunately."

What’s for your tea tonight?

"I'm going to continue with my new found passion of 'can you cook it in the air fryer?'

"So, I don't know what I'm having yet but I can confirm it will be in my air fryer."
