Edinburgh foster dog looking for forever home after rough start to life

A handsome two-year-old dog is looking for his forever home after suffering from some bad luck in his past.

All Dog Rescue Scotland (ADRS) have said that Kobe, who is a mixed breed mutt, has been in and out of kennels since his life began.

They say that he has a lot of love to give and that if there is someone out there with a touch of patience to help him with his mild reactivity, he would make the perfect dog for an adult only home.

Due to their desperation in finding Kobe a home, ADRS have reduced his adoption fee to £100 - they say that he is also able to live with other confident female dogs.

Although excitable, Kobe loves cuddling and socialising, as well as long walks on the beach or in the woods.

He is described as having the build of a lean labrador and is described as being “the best boy.”

His foster mum, Elisabeth, who knows him best, said: “I agreed to foster Kobe with some trepidation because a) he looks really big in the photos b) he’s been in and out of kennels and foster/adopter homes and c) he’s demonstrated reactivity in the past.

“I thought he was going to be a real challenge and despite having fostered reactive dogs previously I thought I might not be able to manage him. I also worried that if my own dog snapped at him - which she does with new fosters to begin with - that he’d retaliate and hurt her given he’s bigger and stronger than her.

“However, I needn't have worried. Kobe is a gorgeous boy, much more handsome than he looks in the pictures, and a real sweetheart.

“He’s smaller than he looks in photos too - he is the size of a lean Labrador. So far he’s one of the easier foster dogs I’ve had.

“He loves a cuddle on the sofa more than anything else. He plays beautifully with my own dog and if he gets a little too excitable she tells him off and he calms down.

“He’s been really good with a friend’s dog too. He walks nicely on a loose lead. We go to the beach a lot and to nearby parks and the woods and he loves it.

“He’s pretty good off the lead but his recall does need a bit of reinforcement as he can get distracted by stuff that smells interesting or if he sees another dog. He’s very happy to meet other dogs on walks, sometimes a bit too eager to say hello, but again better recall will be useful here.

“He’s fine being left home alone for a few hours as he loves a sleep. He’s been great with adult visitors to my house but in the past he has been a little worried by children visiting the home.

“I’ve managed this by putting him in another room when children are visiting. He’s happy with a kong or having a snooze until they’ve left.

“I’ve not seen any reactivity at all from him on walks even when people approach with their dogs to chat. I also make sure he’s on a lead if children are nearby.

“He doesn’t seem bothered by traffic or other noise on walks, or noises in the home. He does get excited when the doorbell rings (as does my dog) so I’m training him to go to his bed and stay calm when it rings.

“He’s good in the car although he will bark when people approach the car which I’m managing with a little counter conditioning. Overall he is a brilliant dog, who is very loving, fun and obedient.

“His reactivity does need a little managing but this is perfectly doable if he finds his dream forever home.”
