Edinburgh driver careers off icy road and leaves gaping hole in cemetery wall

An image has been shared online showing a large hole in a cemetery wall after a driver is understood to have crashed into it.

New Town and Broughton Community Council shared the photo on their Twitter channel with a large hole the size of the front of a car in the stone structure.

Hazard tape as well as fencing has been put around the hole in Warriston Cemetery to ensure that no passers-by are injured by falling brick work.

The cemetery is located in the Trinity area of the capital just off of the well used Warriston Road.

In a Tweet, the community council said: “At first sight, thought this was the long-promised new East Gate access to Warriston cemetery but on reflection, seems it's actually the result of an out of control driver attempting to navigate the curve in the road by the crematorium along Warriston Road.”

It is understood that the hole was caused by a motorist’s vehicle that had slipped in icy conditions shortly before Christmas. The city council is aware of the issue and have said that the wall will be fixed as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We’re aware there was an incident before Christmas and we’re looking into getting the wall repaired.”

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
