Edinburgh dad feels 'disgusted' in high rise flat after grim discovery in home

An Edinburgh dad has spoken of his fears after discovering mould in his high rise council flat.

Conner Walker, 21, who lives in Peffermill Court with his partner and seven-month-old son, claim they have been ill with colds and coughs for weeks.

The caring father read Edinburgh Live’s exclusive that uncovered a problem with mould in the adjacent Craigmillar Court high rise.

Edinburgh mum-of-two Paulina Niedzialek, who lives in a council flat in Craigmillar Court, claimed that her flat was covered in damp and mould.

This led to Conner reaching out to raise awareness around damp and mould in the Craigmillar high rises.

He too claims that he discovered that his flat, which he has lived in for nearly a year, had a problem with mould in his bathroom, cupboards and kitchen.

“I checked the cupboards and bathroom where I discovered mould on the ceiling a few months ago, it was disgusting,” he said.

“I’m going to phone my housing officer as I have a seven-month-old son and there is no need for them to place us in a flat with damp and mould.

“I’m really concerned for my son's health as he has recently been unwell - all of us have had runny noses and coughs.

“The council should be ashamed of themselves for putting people in flats that are covered in mould.

“I’m wanting my house tested and I think everyone in both blocks should be entitled to regular testing to make sure that our homes are safe to live in.”

Conner says that he only recently secured the flat and that he fears the condition of their home could put his family at risk.

The dad says that he hoped the council would offer proper solutions for his family and that the local authority prioritises those with young children.

He continued: “Every house in this block should have safety checks as there are a lot of kids and newborns that live here.

“We need to make sure that there is no mould that can really harm people’s health, it is not fair to be living in a s**t hole.”

A council spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear of these concerns.

“We urge any tenants with concerns to get in contact with the council and we can investigate further."
