The developer Friends Enterprises World Limited wanted to create the new eatery at 29 to 30 London Road, with a an outdoor seating area,
However, over 50 locals registered their disapproval and objected on the planning application about a variety of matters, and an online petition was also circulated locally.
One said: “The proposal will adversely affect residential amenity due to cooking odours not being adequately dispersed and it will not preserve or enhance the special character or appearance of the conservation area.
“The proposed flu will be attached to residential properties and will have a detrimental impact on the visual amenity of the Colonies conservation area. The proposal includes outdoor seating within a few feet of local resident’s gardens and windows.”
Another added: “The proposed development is completely out of keeping with the area and would severely impact the enjoyment of my property as there is to be outdoor seating directly overlooking my garden which could in theory be open until 10pm at night.
“The ventilation and smells associated with this restaurant proposal would also also impact the enjoyment of my home.”
Chief planning officer at Edinburgh Council, David Givan, said the developers failure to provide evidence of mitigation on the impact to their neighbours was the main reason for the refusal.
He said: “The applicant has failed to supply additional information requested relating to the impact of noise on neighbouring properties.
“As a result, it is not possible to establish if the change of use is likely to have an unacceptable impact on amenity in this respect.”
