Edinburgh could see 130 new homes built next to city bypass in huge development

A huge new Edinburgh development could see over 100 homes built on a rural site next to the city bypass.

Plans will now be taken into consideration by the council for the vast site on Gilmerton Station Road in the south of the capital.

This week, developers Taylor Wimpey announced they had acquired the empty land that runs alongside the A720 with the hope of creating a new community.

Proposals have detailed that, if approved, 134 new homes will be constructed, and will include a mixture of two, three and four bedroom houses.

In addition, the plans have earmarked 34 of the new builds will be affordable housing, with the two and three-bedroom homes to come in terraces and semi-detached.

According to Taylor Wimpey, a "development of this scale" will allow them to complete their plans for providing almost 1,000 new homes in the capital, and will connect to surrounding housing estates.

Stating they will "retain and improve" a selection of open green spaces in the area, Pauline Mills, Land and Planning Director for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland adds:

“We are so pleased to have acquired the land off Gilmerton Station Road in South Gilmerton, Edinburgh, which cements our commitment to the Gilmerton South masterplan and will complement our previous local development at Kinloch Green.

"We’re also looking forward to a positive planning decision from The City of Edinburgh Council to allow us to progress our plans and begin delivery of new homes here later this year.

“As well as an impressive range of new homes, our development will provide a range of economic benefits for the local Gilmerton and wider Edinburgh area which includes supporting over 160 jobs per year of construction, as well as the attraction of new customers to local businesses from those who choose to live in one of the new homes this development aims to deliver.”

A planning decision from the City of Edinburgh Council is expected to be made in the coming weeks.
