Edinburgh commuters facing major delays as city bypass smash leaves one lane closed

Edinburgh commuters are facing huge rush hour delays due to a smash on the city bypass that has closed one lane.

The accident occurred shortly before 4:30pm on Wednesday, December 7, between the Calder junction and Hermiston Gait, with police currently in attendance.

One lane is believed to be closed as a result and huge tailbacks are starting to form at the busiest time of the day.

Alerting motorists to the incident, Traffic Scotland tweeted: "NEW: 16:15 A720 Calder Junction. The Westbound carriageway lane 1 (of 2) is currently restricted due to a collision. Police and TRISS are en-route. Take care on approach."

It is currently unknown how many vehicles were involved in the smash and if there are any reported injuries.

An updated tweet from Traffic Scotland warns motorists of 20-minute delays shortly after 5pm, although it is expected increase. They added: "UPDATE: 17:06 A720 Calder Junction: The Westbound carriageway lane 1 (of 2) remains restricted due to a collision. TRISS are in attendance. Traffic is building up on approach. Current delays approx. 20 minutes

Live traffic cameras show traffic queuing at Baberton and Hermiston Gait. Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
