Edinburgh Comic Con cancelled indefinitely as show comes to a 'natural end'

Edinburgh's Comic Con festival has been cancelled indefinitely, with the organisers posting a statement today confirming the sad news.

The event, which attracts thousands of visitors from around the country, gives fans a chance to meet their heroes from the big screen.

Usually held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, the 2021 show at the Royal Highland Centre saw Gladiator star Jet headline an all-star lineup of cult TV and film heroes ahead of Comic Con Scotland, which is a separate event.

The 2019 edition featured martial artist and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first ever UK convention appearance, however the 2020 event was postponed due to the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.

Vampire Diaries trio Daniel Gillies, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley were also joined by Umbrella Academy and Game of Thrones star Tom Hopper, while Reservoir Dogs Michael Madsen, Mr Blonde in the Quentin Tarantino classic, also made an appearance.

Taking to social media today to announce the sad news, the team summarised that the event had been in jeopardy of closing down for a while now.

They said: "This is not the news we had planned to give you all, but it is how things are.

"Although we have moved heaven and earth to keep ECC afloat, its current incarnation has came to its natural end.

"We would like to thank you all for your continued support over all the years, and wish each and every one of you all the best during these uncertain times.

"Official notice has been emailed to ticket holders and exhibitors, alike."

Fans in the comments were quick to convey their disappointment at the sad news.

One said: "It was the best con by far and I am sure it will return.. and when it does I for one will be there to offer my support.. great crowds, great people and fantastic atmosphere... and didn't have to break the bank to attend either, best all round."

Another added: "Ah that sucks. A big thanks to all for those efforts on the previous years and those having to put up with the stress of the last few attempts. Will miss it!"

One expressed: "Ah man. I'm so sorry to read that! I do hope you'll figure something out in the future for another show or something else. It was easily one of the BEST shows I've been to. And I've been to a lot! I feel for you and all your hard work and of course all the fans, including me."
