Edinburgh Christmas Market: The best gifts you can get for family and friends

Getting Christmas gifts can be a drag over the festive period when there is only so much time in the day to roast the tatties, clean the house, put up the tree and buy presents.

So it is worthwhile trying to pick up bits and pieces and maximising your time whenever you are out and about in the city centre.

A lot of residents make it a tradition to head up to the Christmas Market with their families and friends, so we thought it would be a great idea to point out some of the fantastic gifts and stocking fillers that can be snaffled up whilst taking in the wintry sights.

There is something for just about everyone in East Princes Gardens and at the stalls that are set up adjacent to the art gallery - from stuffed toys to goofy hats, scarves and gloves as well as more boutique handmade items.

But let's start with the real champion of Christmas for anyone over the age of 21: socks.

A stall called Joe Cool has a fantastic selection of festive and themed socks that would make an ideal present for the fathers out there with socks containing more holes than Swiss cheese.

You can get a singular pair - as we did - for £5 or mix and match with three pairs going for the reasonable price of £10. Tisya is also on hand to ensure you get exactly what you need with her sage advice.

Next up was some brightly coloured bowls of all shapes and sizes that could work for a variety of different family members.

The larger bowls, which come with the steeper price tag of £45, could spruce up your granny's kitchen and would be ideal for them to show off an edgy side to their bingo pals as they hold their 75p bananas.

The smaller bowls, as you can see, come in all different sizes with multi buy options creating a bargain option if you wanted to get a snazzy bowl for a few friends and hope they never speak to one another about it.

The cute tiny bowls - three for £10 - would be ideal for that friend that loves putting out the chip and dip - salsa, guac and sour cream in those little gems and you are the hero of the Hogmanay party.

There were also a lot of options for anyone looking to earn the admiration of a young nephew or niece.

One stall had a number of cute handmade stuffed toys, from bears, foxes, monkeys and even flamingos!

Be the envy of the other aunts and uncles as you steal the show with a tartan sausage dog for £15.

Of course, you may be thinking 'I do not need the validation of a child but I do need to make it up to my brother or sister for missing the baby’s christening after suffering from a monster hangover'.

Fear not dear friends, for these cute little knitted festive cardigans will have the siblings eating from your hand - the £25 is a bit steep for you young guns but maybe just hold off on that extra shot during your Christmas night out.

In the age of Marvel and Star Wars reboots, there is always a family member that loves a bit of a geek out but is also partial to a bit too much eggnog on Xmas morning.

You’re probably thinking 'how on earth do I combine their nerdy tendencies with their love for alcohol?!' - well ponder no more, as there are gift pack cocktail sets for Potter, Star Wars and Strangers Things nuts starting at £34.

The next thing that caught our attention was a small ceramic jug for £35 that could be used for milk, gravy or even a little bit of water to help take the edge of that single malt whisky you already planned on buying granddad.

Their versatility really jumped out at us but the idea of sitting by a roasting fire with a bowl of pigs in blankets and a jug of gravy really sold it - maybe this is a gift for yourself, it has been a tough year, you deserve it after all.

Last but by no means least, we came across some amazing handmade candles from Edwin Berry that come in all shapes and varying scents.

We all have that one uncle that bangs on about how inflation is ruining the economy or spouting his latest view on another Independence referendum, so why not get them a vanilla and berry scented candle to chill him out.

You’ve pigged out on turkey and stuffing and had too many Bailey’s, the last thing you need to hear about is why falling house prices are ruining his property portfolio.

Of course there were too many items to count, from Christmas baubles that are a sweet secret santa gift, to small incense holders shaped like cute ski lodges.

There truly is a gift for every member of your circle at this year’s Edinburgh Christmas Market.
