Edinburgh children as young as 12 caught by police drinking alcopops in playpark

Edinburgh Police caught children as young as 12-year-old drinking alcohol at the weekend.

Officers were in Leith on patrol when they encountered the youngsters, drinking sweet alcoholic drinks like Dragon Soup and Cactus Jack.

The incident is believed to have occurred over the weekend, with Police Scotland posting the information onto their social media channels.

Police have been conducting the high visibility patrols in the area for a while as they look to engage and protect the local community.

Following the weekend’s incident the children were taken home and had the alcohol confiscated.

This will be followed up with a child concern report.

A spokesperson said: “NECPT responding to youth disorder in Easter Road today came across a number of young people in Dalmeny Park in possession of alcohol, some as young as 12 years old.

"Officers seized the alcohol and took the children home. Concern reports were submitted.”

Child concern reports are recorded on the Police Scotland “interim Vulnerable Persons Database”.

This is a national system and allows information to be recorded or viewed by officers throughout Scotland.

Vulnerable children come to the attention of the police by a number of means.

Some incidents are reported in person at Police Stations, via telephone, third party reporting, or through concerns being passed by partner agencies.
