Edinburgh BBC Antiques Roadshow guest speechless after learning value of plate

A guest who appeared on an episode of Antiques Roadshow filmed in Edinburgh couldn't believe her ears when she learned the truth about her great aunt's plate.

The long-running BBC show filmed its newest episode at the capital's Botanic Gardens where the woman came to learn more about the antique.

Containing three bright blue stones, the handcrafted silver dish had been given to her by her late aunt — but she was never told how much it was worth.

When asked by antiques specialist Alastair Dickenson for some more information about the plate, she answered: "I think it was made by the Guild of Handicraft somewhere near the beginning of the 20th century."

As reported by Birmingham Live, the woman's great aunt Jean was born in Fife in 1912, and left her the plate before she died.

She continued: "It was one of these old ladies who she looked after who gave her this plate which she gave to us as a family."

Alastair responded: "What a fantastic present to have and, if you look at the dish, you'll see all the hammer marks all around it. That just shows it was a flat sheet which was hammered up into the shape required.

"But what is particularly nice about your dish is that it has these three enamel little stones on here - that is quite rare."

He revealed: "I think at auction it could easily get £2,000."

Surprised to learn the value, the woman said "Good grief, my goodness!"

She continued: "I just didn't expect that, she did have an eye for things, my aunt."

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
