An unhappy diner has complained of being served raw vegetables by a “grumpy” teenager at a city centre restaurant during a birthday celebration.
The unsatisfactory meal was said to have taken place at Browns Brasserie & Bar on George Street last month during February 2023.
The customer said that they had taken a parent out for a bite to eat to mark their birthday but that the service was "below that of a fast food restaurant."

They added that the meal was very expensive and they did not appreciate being served by a "grumpy and uninterested teenager." As well as this, they hit out at being asked to pay for a service charge when it came time to pick up the bill. Managers have since apologised and offered to restore the customer's faith in them.
The diner posted on the reviewing site TripAdvisor: “Awful. Raw vegetables, cold and overcooked beef, served by a grumpy, uninterested teenager. What more could you ask for when you take a parent out for their Birthday. Well done all.
“The cheek to include a service charge is mind boggling, will actively be not recommending. And no, I’m not interesting in contacting your email. This was a very expensive family meal, had friendlier service and better cooking from fast food restaurants.”
The general manager at Browns responded and apologised for their experience during their visit to the bar and restaurant. They offered to speak with the customer in an attempt to try to rectify their opinion of the business.
They responded: “Good afternoon, I am so terribly sorry you did not enjoy your recent visit to Browns. This is certainly not the kind of feedback we are used to receiving, I appreciate you do not wish to contact us directly to discuss your visit further, this is a shame as we have clearly fallen far below the mark and would appreciate the opportunity to restore your faith in Browns. I hope you accept my sincere apologies.”
Browns however is relatively well respected by customers with a three-and-a-half star rating out of five on TripAdvisor. The vast majority of reviews are classed as excellent or very good.
One diner left a five star review stating: “This is almost my definition of what Sunday brunch is all about. Great menu options with steak and eggs next to mashed avocado toast.
“All three of us had the Traditional Breakfast it was outstanding (very tasty sausages). Staff know what they are doing and the room is excellent.
“Very good value for money with all of us eating massively for under £20 per head. Will be back.”
Whilst another said: “We started my daughter's birthday with the most delicious breakfast here; the food was scrumptious and the best start to her day! We were served by Lyn, who was absolutely wonderful and a delight to talk to. Thank you.”
