Edinburgh airport travellers in queue chaos after security find unattended bag

Security lines at Edinburgh Airport have left people queuing for over an hour, after staff members discovered an unattended bag.

Airport officials warned travellers that wait times for security were longer than usual while staff dealt with the baggage.

In a statement, Edinburgh airport said that they "would not apologise for prioritising the safety" of passengers and staff during the incident.

An update posted by Edinburgh Airport on social media at 5am said: "As of a few minutes ago the time to get through security from first joining the queue was 40-60 minutes

"We are very busy, and queues are longer than we would like. It's important you have prepared for security."

One passenger complained on twitter that the security gates were "broken", stopping anyone from getting through.

However, the airport responded: "No, gates weren’t broken - we closed them while security offices checked an unattended bag. Safety and security of passengers and staff is paramount and we prioritise it at all times."

Responding to a user who questioned how prepared staff were, they later added: "We are Bryan but staff had to inspect an unattended bag.

"Sorry passengers had to wait longer than normal but no apologies for prioritising the safety of them and staff."

The airport has previously warned of busy periods during the summer months after photographs of 'chaotic scenes' emerged at the start of June.

They will be issuing updates on how long queues and the security process is on their social media channels at 5am, 9am, 1pm and 5pm.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said: “Security staff responded to an incident by closing the hall to investigate – the hall reopened within ten minutes after the incident was cleared.

"This is a well-managed response and certainty not the 'chaos' referred to.

“We are sorry passengers had to wait but we make no apologies for prioritising the safety of them and our staff.”
