Edinburgh Airport Ryanair flights to Spain and France cancelled due to strike action

A number of Ryanair flights to and from Edinburgh Airport have been scrapped as air traffic control staff in France take strike action.

The budget airline has been forced to cancel 420 flights in total on Friday September 16 as the industrial action grounds French flights, as well as those flying in the country's airspace. According to the airline, 80,000 passengers are affected.

Not only are Edinburgh flights to and from France cancelled but some services to Spain have also been axed.

Instigated by the SNCTA air traffic control union, the strike action in France follows a dispute over wages and recruitment.

Along with Ryanair, a number of other airlines such as easyJet have grounded their jets for the day with over 1,000 flights impacted. Transavia airline was set to take off from Edinburgh to Paris at 8.45am this morning but was cancelled, along with Ryanair flights to Toulouse, Madrid, Santiago, Poitiers, Nimes/Garons and Nantes.

Only on Thursday September 15 were all affected passengers have been contacted via email or text message and adds that it apologises to its customers for these unnecessary disruptions that this French ATC strike will cause them.

According to Edinburgh Airport's website, 13 flights in total, that were due to depart from Edinburgh have been cancelled today. There are six Ryanair flights cancelled, one from easyJet to Madrid, another flight to Paris with Virgin Atlantic and four flights with Air Mauritius and one Air Europa flight to Paris. Ryanair Ops Director, Neal McMahon said on Thursday: “It is inexplicable that thousands of European citizens/visitors will have their travel plans unfairly disrupted tomorrow, (Fri September 16) by yet another French ATC strike.

"Ryanair is once again calling for immediate EU action to prevent these ATC strikes disrupting the travel plans of thousands of European citizens/visitors.

"It is inexcusable that passengers who are not even flying to/from France are disrupted because they overfly French Airspace at a time when French laws protect French domestic flights. It is time that the EU step in and protect overflights so that European passengers are not repeatedly held to ransom by a tiny French ATC union.”
