Edinburgh Airport passengers join massive summer getaway as huge queue spotted

Huge numbers of holidaymakers have jetted off to mark the start of the summer season as some passengers at Edinburgh Airport reportedly waited 45 minutes to clear security.

The start of the summer holidays, which is typically the busiest time of the year, and a minor fault with security lanes causing a higher volume of passengers waiting to board flights on Thursday morning.

Before the issue involving a few security lanes being out of action was quickly rectified, one passenger and frequent flyer took to social media to say it was the busiest they had ever seen the airport shortly before 6am.

A picture taken by the passenger shows passengers queued right to the escalator below check-in all the way to security, which seemingly took a select group of passengers around 45 minutes to clear. But the waiting time was soon reduced to under ten minutes following the morning's heavy influx.

Taking to Twitter, one passenger said: "Massive queue for security, right to the top of the escalator at @EDI_Airport this morning. Never seen it this busy before."

They then added: "Nearly 20 minutes now, still not scanned my boarding pass yet. Most scanners closed due to the volume of people."

A fault with two lanes that passengers are filed into before security contributed to a slight hold up, as well as passengers arriving early ahead of check-in and a general peak of flyers.

Last year the airport issued regular updates on social media regarding security waiting times and encouraged passengers to only arrive at the terminal once check-in had opened, preventing delays.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: “Airports are busy environments and although queues are expected at peak times we aim to minimise these and process passengers in good time.

“Unfortunately a technical issue affecting two of our lanes led to longer wait times for some passengers this morning, which was one of our busiest days of the year so far. The issue was quickly resolved and wait times returned to levels we would expect.

“We remind passengers to prepare for security by following the liquid rules and ensuring all large electricals like laptops and tablets are removed from their bags and placed in a tray provided.”
