Edinburgh Airport: Lufthansa staff strike sparks flight cancellations to holiday hotspots

Staff working for the German travel carrier Lufthansa are the latest to be striking and to and from Edinburgh Airport could be affected.

Germany's a popular holiday destination for those looking for a city break and indulge in food, beer and history but Germany's main union Ver.di have confirmed industrial action will be taking place affecting the country's major airports - Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne-Bonn, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, and Stuttgart.

On Wednesday July 27, tens of thousands of staff are expected to walk out following a dispute over a 9.5 per cent pay claim. At Frankfurt Airport the strike will run from 3.30am to 2.30 on Wednesday and at the other airports, the strike will run from 3.45am to 2pm on Thursday.

International flight cancellations to and from German airports and disruptions are expected and the airline will be contacting all passengers who are affected by the strikes. The cancellations will be confirmed today (Tuesday 26) and as it stands, there are no flights available on Wednesday July 27 from Edinburgh Airport to Frankfurt, according to Lufthansa's website.

The union Ver.dI said in a statement: “The union Verdi is calling the one-day strike to raise pressure on the employer to make a much-improved and acceptable pay offer in the next round of talks."

20,000 employees involved in ground handling, administration, maintenance, and security will be taking part in the strike. For those flying from Germany to Edinburgh, the airline is urging to travellers to rebook for another day.

In a statement, Lufthansa said: "If your international flight to Germany is operating but your international onward flight from Frankfurt or Munich is cancelled, Lufthansa recommends a rebooking for another day. Should you still take your flight to Frankfurt or Munich without a confirmed alternative for the onward flight, there is a risk that you will not be able to continue your journey there for several hours or days.

"In such a case, please also consider visa regulations for entry into Germany. If you are able to arrange your own onward travel (e.g. rental car, bus, train), please keep all receipts for subsequent reimbursement of costs. The same applies to any hotel accommodation."

This comes after Ryanair staff around Europe and easyJet cabin crew in Spain voted to strike last month following a dispute over pay and working condition. British Airway staff at Heathrow Airport also voted in favour of strike action following weeks of travel chaos but this has since been called off as BA then voted to accept the pay deal.
