If you are one of the lucky ones are are soon heading to Edinburgh Airport, boarding a plane and jetting off into the sunset, then we're quite jealous.

But whilst we hope you have an easy and stress-free holiday, we also hope the same applies to getting there and back.

Up and down the country there have been delays and cancellations at major airports with many people having to miss out on their holiday.

Thankfully however it all seems to be settling down with Edinburgh Airport giving regular updates to re-assure passengers.

Giving a security update the airport said that at around 9am this morning (June 7), the time to get through security from first joining the queue was 1-20 minutes. Then at 1pm, the times remained the same in their latest update adding that "security is flowing well, but please remember to prepare in advance."

In addition to the update, the airport reminded people of some helpful hints and tips to getting through security.

Discussing the topic on the website in detail they stressed that people should not wear a belt, jewellery or a jacket when going through the scanner.

In addition, people should take out their liquids beforehand and ensure they are in the clear bag as instructed.

So what other tips does the airport have for others?

Keep your pockets empty

It doesn't matter what you have in your pockets whether it's a key, coins, your phone or even a tissue - you need to empty them completely.

If not, the airport warns that "you can expect to be stopped in your tracks" stressing it's an "important rule, and one not to be sniffed at."

Remove your hoodie

Edinburgh Airport have said that although it may not seem like it, wearing additional clothing layer such as a hoodie can make a difference.

They explain: "Our scanners are designed to pick up any anomalies on your body, and so if you’re wearing a big hood that’ll show on our system and we might need to stop you.

"Shiny reflective tops can also cause confusion and may lead to a search. One to keep in mind."

The best thing to do is place your hoodie in the tray alongside your belt, phone and other items as you go through security.

Don't cover up your tech

Edinburgh Airport have said that a "frequent mistake" that their security teams sees is people removing electronics such as iPads and laptops from their bags and placing them in the tray to then cover them up with items such as a jacket or hoodie.

They warn: "Please don’t do this. All large electronics have to be uncovered. Otherwise there’s little point in removing them from your bag."

If you cover your tech up, your tray may be pulled aide to be looked at and thus making your trip through security longer than it needs to be.

Check, check and check again

Thanks to Covid, more people will be carrying items such as hand sanitiser with them. However regardless, passengers need to ensure all liquids they have are under 100ml and packed away in a sealed, clear bag.

The airport have said that they are "amazed at how many times we see people thinking they’ve packed everything away properly only to be surprised to find make up or sanitiser sitting at the bottom of their bag."

Because of this, they urge people to double and triple check what they are packing and to ensure this doesn't happen.
