Edinburgh Airport hosts huge RAF military aircraft as landed captured on film

A video on social media has captured a huge RAF plane landing at Edinburgh Airport this week.

The imposing Boeing C-17A Globemaster III landed in the capital yesterday, March 23, from the RAF base in Brize Norton, England, before making off to another military camp in Northolt.

One lucky user on TikTok was lucky enough to be standing right next to the enormous spectacle when it landed at the airport, capturing the perfect video which includes the plane moving towards the terminal.

It is understood that the plane was circling the area for an essential training exercise, gifting locals a rare chance to grab a close-up view of the impressive aircraft.

Arriving from the Brize Norton station that acts as the hub for the RAF's Air Transport and Air-To-Air refuelling services, the team tweeted that the plane would be circling around Edinburgh, Belfast and Aberdeen.

They said: "This morning, one of our C-17 Globemaster aircraft is planned to be operating in the vicinity of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Belfast, whilst engaged in routine and essential training."

The military aircraft arrived in the capital shortly after 2pm, before it made its way to another RAF base just before 4pm, landing less then an hour later.

The destination from Edinburgh was RAF Northolt in West London, the site used by both military and civilian aircraft and home to units from all three Armed Services and the Ministry of Defence.

The impressive Boeing C-17A Globemaster was developed for the United States Military in the 1980s and is described as the RAF as a "long range, heavy-lift strategic transport aircraft that can operate close to a potential area of operations for combat, peacekeeping or humanitarian missions worldwide."

It adds that the C-17 is capable of rapid, strategic delivery of troops and all types of heavy cargo to main operating bases anywhere in the world. Chinook helicopters, military vehicles and other heavy items of specialist kit are all able to be transported on board the aircraft.

It can also transport 100,000lb (45,360kg) of freight more than 4,500nm (8,334km) while flying at altitudes above 35,000ft.
