Edinburgh activists hold 24-hour long vigil and protest on International Women's Day

Edinburgh activists claimed the streets with a 24-hour vigil to mark International Woman’s Day.

The day long protest, organised by the group Women’s Climate Strike, began last night at the Scottish Parliament and lasted throughout the day until 7pm.

In the lead up the protest they said that women are “disproportionately impacted by climate change and often least responsible for the emissions driving it.”

Extinction Rebellion’s Red Rebel Brigade were also present in the city today (March 8), distinct in their long red robes.

The vigil and rally lasted throughout the day and drew hundreds of attendees, with speeches from the likes of Lucy Hammond from the Women’s Equality Party and Fiona Steele from the STUC.

Speaking online before the event Women’s Climate Strike called on women from across Scotland to come along.

A spokesperson said: “We call on all women (Female, Intersex, Non-Binary, Trans) and allies, from across Scotland, to gather with us outside the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, for a ’drop-in’ 24-hour vigil and rally for Climate & Nature.

“Come and stand for the whole vigil OR for just a few minutes - whatever you can manage - in solidarity with women and girls already being impacted by climate chaos around the world.

“Women are disproportionately impacted by climate change and often least responsible for the emissions driving it.

"Yet we are woefully under-represented when it comes to high-level discussions on climate action, despite the fact that women have shown great climate leadership when given the opportunity.

“Women are carrying the weight of the world’s inaction and yet still we wait for meaningful action to be taken to avert the rapidly unfolding climate and nature crisis.

“We will wait no longer. We want a seat at the table and we want climate justice now! The 24-hour ‘drop in’ vigil will take place from 7pm on the 7th March to 7pm on the 8th March. Women have immense power when we act collectively. Let’s be the change we want to see.”
