Edinburgh activists 'deflate 50 SUV's tyres' overnight in plush neighbourhood

A worldwide activist group have claimed they targeted a number of drivers in one of Edinburgh's most sought after neighbourhoods this week.

Tyre Extinguishers have previously deflated the tyres on a selection of SUV vehicles around the capital, with the organisation campaigning to see more environmentally friendly travel.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 7, the group claimed volunteers had been out in force in the Morningside and Merchiston area of the city, where they worked until the early hours on a selection of cars.

Reporting they had 'disarmed' the vehicles, the movement had been planned to mark two months before the COP27 summit.

In a statement, Tyre Extinguishers said 50 vehicles in and around the Edinburgh suburbs had been targeted, with other groups completing similar action around Europe.

Marion Walker, Tyre Extinguishers spokesperson, said: “Six months in and 9,000 SUVs later, our movement is just beginning. Our
strength is that anyone, anywhere can take part using our website.

"Politely asking for climate action, clean air and safer streets has failed. It’s time for action. If enough people join us, it will be impossible to own an SUV in the world's urban areas, and we'll see these death machines piling up on
the scrapheap."

The Tyre Extinguishers want to see bans on SUVs in urban areas, pollution levies to tax SUVs out of existence, and massive investment in free, comprehensive public transport.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
