EDF can’t move me on to its super-cheap EV charging deal

EDF is inviting customers to sign up to its GoElectric Overnight tariff which promises “super cheap off-peak rates of just 8p a kWh to power your electric car and home appliances for less”.

If you sign up, you receive an automated email saying the switch will take place within five working days. And then nothing happens.

Having waited several weeks, I have been in touch twice with customer services and have now been told that, although EDF is offering this, it actually doesn’t have a computer system in place capable of fulfilling it.

All customers who attempted to sign up are therefore “on a list” waiting for the IT department to give them what was promised.

In short, EDF is advertising an EV tariff it cannot deliver which, at best, I think is greenwashing.

MA, Bristol

The GoElectric Overnight tariff is an eye-catching deal for EV drivers with its promise of “five hours of off-peak electricity at 8p per kWh” and a “20-mile commute for as little as 46p”.

Whatever the teething problems were, they have now been resolved, as the tariff is live.

EDF says there had been a technical issue when it was moving customer data onto a new computer system and, as a result, some people, such as you, received a confirmation, instead of a note explaining why they were not yet able to sign up.

EDF has begun contacting customers on the waiting list, to move them onto the tariff, and says they will receive a credit for the delay which will cover their estimated off-peak consumption.
