Ederson: Manchester City ‘are doing all they can’ to keep Fernandino in some capacity

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has revealed the club are “doing all they can” to keep Fernandinho.

Manager Pep Guardiola recently confirmed City would make a decision on the veteran future’s at the end of the season while praising the 36-year-old’s attitude.

While Rodri has largely overtaken the Brazilian in the midfield holding role, Fernandinho came back into the side for the FA Cup win at Championship side Peterborough.

Able to cover in both midfield and defence, his presence will be valuable as City battle on a number of fronts with crucial fixtures in the Premier League, Champions League and Cup on the horizon.

Naturally, Fernandinho’s importance has waned over the years but few would doubt his legacy at City and - most importantly - he remains a reliable figure on the pitch when called upon.

Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League round-of-16 second-leg with Sporting, Ederson talked of his compatriot’s importance.

“I don’t know what he will do after this year because it’s the last year in his contract. I know the club are doing all they can.

“He guides and advises both young and experienced players.

“Certain times, some players may be relaxed a little, but he tells players to be focused for 90 minutes and always look for another goal - that’s why he has a position of leadership and respect throughout the team.”
