Eddie Howe transfer warning to Leeds United and relegation rivals as Newcastle refuse to give in

Leeds United and Newcastle United have played out several Premier League classics at Elland Road over the years.

Since both clubs made a return to the top flight after varied stints in the EFL, neither have shied away from making headlines.

Yesterday's contest between the pair was hardly an encounter of epic proportions, but it could prove to be a turning point for the Magpies, if they achieve the improbable and stave off the drop in May.

Following Newcastle's 1-0 win, newly-installed boss Eddie Howe spoke to the assembled journalists at Elland Road, many of whom had questions for the ex-Bournemouth boss.

One in particular queried the club's stance on the January transfer market. Newcastle's pursuit of some of Europe's top players this month has been well-documented and publicised many countries over.

Their newfound riches under the stewardship of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund means they can once again be a force in the transfer market, if not on the pitch.

"We're not close on anything [transfer-related] as I sit here now," Howe admitted.

"Today's win might help us in the market.

"We will be active until the last day," he added.

Howe's admission that Newcastle will aim to remain active in the market until the final day of the January transfer window is a reminder to the Magpies' fellow relegation rivals, and clubs currently just out of reach like Leeds, that they will endeavour to remain a Premier League club, whatever the cost.

For clubs such as Leeds, it forces them to accept that no business in this window, postured alongside Newcastle's investment will be referred back to in the summer if the Whites experience a tough run of form and find themselves dragged back into a relegation mire.

While that is not currently the case, Newcastle and Norwich City's victories this weekend have tightened the bottom of the table in concertina fashion.
