Eddie Howe reaping the rewards for Bruno Guimaraes masterplan at Newcastle United

Eddie Howe made one of his toughest calls as Newcastle United manager on February 8. Ahead of a crucial six-pointer against Everton, the Toon boss left Bruno Guimaraes on the bench - a decision that was met with frustration from a segment of supporters.

At the time, the Magpies were one point adrift from safety and fresh from a mid-season trip to Saudi Arabia after recording just their second win of the campaign. Guimaraes completed his move just nine days earlier and impatient fans were clamouring to see the £40million man.

Had Newcastle lost, Howe would have faced some tough questions. Instead, his decision was vindicated and St James’ Park witnessed its most memorable game of the season as the Magpies climbed out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory.

A winning midfield formula of Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Joelinton allowed the Toon boss to blood Guimaraes into the side gradually and adjust to the rigours of the Premier League. Fans caught brief glimpses of excellence from the Brazilian during five substitute appearances but his true quality remained an enigma until Howe handed him his first start at Southampton.

Despite not being known for his goalscoring prowess, the 24-year-old’s brilliant backheel finish snatched a dramatic victory to make the 650-mile round trip worthwhile. Guimaraes oozed class in tight defeats to Chelsea and Everton but against Wolves - his first start on home soil - he showcased his finest hour to date.

The Brazilian ran the show from midfield, completing 37 of 41 (90%) of his passes against the European hopefuls. He also won 12 duels - the most from both sides - made four tackles, won possession seven times and had 100% dribble success. Guimaraes looked every bit a £40million player and the cautious approach from Howe to let him adapt has paid dividends.

With top-flight survival all but secured, the maestro can use the remaining eight games as an extended preseason so he is ready to devastate opposition midfielders further from August. The prospect of Guimaraes being in full flight next season is scary after Friday night’s showing.
