Eddie Howe gives update on Callum Wilson injury fear as Kieran Trippier eyes comeback

Callum Wilson could run out of games in his bid to be fit again this season.

But England star Kieran Trippier is poised to step up his comeback form injury as soon as next week for Newcastle United. Newcastle striker Wilson is being nursed back to full fitness after suffering a bad tear in his calf and achilles in December.

He is back out on the grass running but boss Eddie Howe has admitted caution is needed as he increases his workload and tries to avoid breaking down. Howe is hoping Trippier will be back in full training and in contention to play next weekend after a scan this weekend on his broken foot which is believed to have healed well.

Asked about Wilson’s injury, Howe said: “It’s not necessarily a gloomy assessment, it more reflects the type of injury he has had. It needs time. We need to stress the Achilles and the calf in the right way because if we do it too fast he is going to reinjure himself and if we go too slow, we are going to run out of games this season.

“With Kieran, it’s a bone injury and once it is healed he will be good to go. He has a scan on his foot to see how it has healed. Maybe we can push him quickly to get back and get good news. The Achilles (with Callum) is a lot more delicate. It’s not a gloomy assessment, we knew this would take time. Callum is slightly behind and is back on the grass running but has more time ahead.”

Fabian Schar is available after missing Switzerland’s games during the international break, and keeper Martin Dubravka is also available after training. Howe added: “Fab came back having not played or trained but we have had two sessions with him and hope he will be fit.”
