Eddie Dunbar into top five in Giro d'Italia after stunning stage 16 ride

Eddie Dunbar has moved into the top five in general classification at Giro d'Italia after a stunning ride that saw him take on some of the main contenders for the event.

On an excellent day for Irish cycling, Ben Healy took the King of the Mountains Jersey after 5000 meters of climbing, the breakaway group that he led was only reeled in on the final climb of a gruelling 203km stage.

Geraint Thomas is the new pink jersey holder with Dunbar coming home fourth finishing 25 seconds behind stage 16 winner Joao Almeida. Dunbar is now placed fifth in the general classification.

The Cork-man had targeted a top-10 finish before the event and is exceeding expectations in only his second Grand Tour. He spoke to Eurosport after the stage and was keen to avoid getting carried away.

"It's not a victory or anything, it's a fourth place. You have to take that into account. I'm still off the top guys G [Thomas] and Almeida, but it's a positive day.

"This is all I've ever wanted, to have an opportunity in a race like this. Thankfully the team, Jayco AlUla have put belief in me."

Portugal's Joao Almeida won the stage after a superb ride that see's him just 18 seconds behind Geraint Thomas who leads the general classification.
