Documentary producer Ed Barreveld returns to EFM with new projects

Ed Barreveld is a seasoned veteran of the European Film Market.

Ed Barreveld, a seasoned veteran of the European Film Market, is making his way back to Berlin through his Storyline Entertainment banner. Over the years, Barreveld has successfully sold feature documentaries to esteemed broadcasters such as CBC, PBS, Discovery, NatGeo, Sky UK, ZDF, and ARTE. With his impressive 35 years of experience in the documentary space, he has become known for his expertise in combining Canadian and international storytellers, financiers, and distributors to create factual features that delve into hidden places and issues within society and culture.

Barreveld's producer credits include notable works such as Angad Bhalla's 'Herman's House,' a compelling story about Herman Wallace, a prisoner in a solitary cell in Louisiana's notorious 'Angola' prison, who draws his dream house; Nisha Pahuja's 'The World Before Her,' which offers an intriguing perspective on women competing in the Miss India pageant; and Min Sook-Lee's 'Tiger Spirit,' a film that captures a rare family reunion across the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

As he prepares to attend the European Film Market once again, Barreveld shared some insights with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked about his state of mind heading into the event, he expressed his excitement and optimism to witness how the market will react to his recently finished films and several new projects in development.

Reflecting on his past experiences at festivals and markets in Berlin, Barreveld recounted a memorable moment. He recalled walking around the Brandenburg Gate and unexpectedly stumbling upon a lively anti-Russia protest. As he turned the corner, he encountered an old street vendor cheerfully selling Ushanka hats adorned with Soviet cockades. Unable to resist, he bought one for his wife, even though she has yet to wear it.

When asked about what every visitor to Berlin should see, Barreveld, being a history enthusiast, suggests exploring the city's walkable streets that are rich in history. He recommends starting from Potsdamer Platz and making one's way to the iconic Brandenburg Gate. Along the way, visitors can pass by significant landmarks such as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Soviet War Memorial, and the Memorial for Murdered Sinta and Roma. To top it off, a stroll on Unter den Linden, Berlin's famous boulevard, offers a glimpse of the city's iconic TV tower.

Considering the chilly February weather in Berlin, Barreveld reassures that his Canadian background makes him accustomed to the cold. Nonetheless, he advises visitors to come prepared with warm coats, hats, gloves, and, of course, an umbrella to stay comfortable.

When it comes to staying healthy and avoiding the infamous 'festival flu,' Barreveld suggests greeting people with a hearty hug rather than the customary cheek kisses, especially post-pandemic. Additionally, he recommends carrying a bottle of echinacea and vitamin C for added immune support.

In terms of dining and drinks, Barreveld highlights Indian Street Food for their fantastic takeout and the Posh Bar for their delectable cocktails.

When it comes to avoiding the overwhelming frenzy of the festival, Barreveld recommends retreating to the serene Tiergarten, a large park situated right in the heart of the city. Although quieter during the winter months, he acknowledges that the experience may change with better weather. Alternatively, he finds solace in his Airbnb, where he can escape the crowds, focus on work, or catch up on some much-needed rest.

While Barreveld hasn't had any notable celebrity encounters during his time in Berlin, he reveals that he never travels without his soundbar and a trusty bottle of aspirin.

As Ed Barreveld makes his way back to Berlin for the European Film Market, his wealth of experience and passion for documentary storytelling ensures that he will continue to captivate audiences with thought-provoking and engaging films.
