easyJet plane makes emergency landing after pilot issue

An easyJet plane has had to make an emergency landing after a pilot issue.

The Mirror reports the Airbus A320 needed to land on the Algarve after the pilot fell ill. It is believed 100 people were onboard when the co-pilot took over and landed the aircraft.

It diverted to Faro in Portugal after taking off from London Gatwick just after 6.30am this morning bound for Agadir in Morocco. It was due to arrive at 9.25am local time.

An online flight tracker has shown the Airbus A320’s unscheduled stop following the mid-air alert. Leading Portuguese daily Correio da Manha is reporting a Faro airport source has told it the diversion is the result of the pilot suffering an "indisposition."

It said a red alert had been activated and the co-pilot successfully landed the plane. EasyJet has been approached for comment.

It is not yet clear what time the plane will now reach its destination and whether the pilot will continue on the flight or has been taken to hospital.

Earlier this week, the ECHO reported an easyJet plane destined for Turkey was met by police after it was forced to make an emergency landing.

The Airbus set off from Liverpool John Lennon Airport at 1.06pm on Wednesday, April 19 and was bound for Dalaman in Turkey. The plane was met by police on the tarmac after two passengers started behaving "disruptively" onboard.

Eyewitnesses claimed the two passengers left the plane with German police. A spokesperson from easyJet said: "easyJet can confirm that the flight EZY3409 from Liverpool to Dalaman on 19 April diverted to Munich and was met by police due to two passengers behaving disruptively onboard.

"easyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time."
