EasyJet has apologised as it cancels 200 flights across the UK, including in Scotland, over IT issues.

The major airline has urged travellers to check their bookings before going to the airport, according to Reuters.

Flights that were due to leave between midday and 2 pm GMT on the low-cost airline were reportedly impacted.

"Our team of IT specialists is working to restore the systems as soon as possible," easyJet said.

The company had earlier said in a statement that "flights due to depart between 1 pm and 3 pm UK time today may be impacted".

It also advised customers to use its flight tracker to check the status of their booking before making their way to the airport.

The airline has apologised to all customers whose flights have been affected by the IT system issues.

EasyJet customers have taken to social media to express their frustration over the cancelled flights from various locations, both in the UK and Europe.

In Scotland, flights this afternoon from Edinburgh to Gatwick have been cancelled including the EZY806 (departing at 13:40) and the EZY808 (leaving at 15:35).

Meanwhile, in Europe, the EJU6974 departing from Majorca Palma to Edinburgh at 15:00 and due to arrive just after 17:00 was also cancelled, causing disruption to travellers.

One customer complained on Twitter: "@easyJet how do I go about getting compensation for my now cancelled hotel for tonight? Rescheduled to fly from Scotland tomorrow but is that likely to even go ahead? #easyJet #cancelled #flight #LiverpoolFC #liverpoolrealmadrid #UEFAChampionsLeague #UEFA."

Another traveller that was supposed to be in Paris today tweeted: "Wish I was too. EasyJet flight cancelled from Scotland."

While a third took to the social media site for answers: "Hi, have you heard anything regarding Easy Jet flights being cancelled ( family stuck in Palma & were due to come back to Edinburgh & apparently big issues in Europe? Any news on this? Thanks."

EasyJet said: "We advise customers due to travel with us today to continue to check Flight Tracker to check the status of their flight before making their way to the airport.

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused and would like to thank customers for their patience as we work to resolve this as soon as possible."
