Eastern Michigan Player Apologizes for Sucker Punch After Bowl Loss to South Alabama

Eastern Michigan defensive back Korey Hernandez apologized Sunday night for attacking South Alabama defensive back Jamarrien Burt while his back was turned after the Jaguars’ victory over the Eagles on Saturday.

The Jaguars had gathered on their home field in Mobile to celebrate the 59–10 victory in the 68 Ventures Bowl when Hernandez came out of nowhere with a sucker punch that sparked an ugly brawl

“I must first apologize for the embarrassment that I have caused for my family, my team, the Eastern Michigan University community, and the Mid-American Conference by my actions last night,” Hernandez wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I have also had the opportunity to personally apologize to Jamarrien Burt and Coach Wommack of South Alabama, and both have accepted my apology.”

It remains unclear why Hernandez attacked Burt, but it’s clear he wants to leave the incident in the past. His statement comes hours after Eastern Michigan athletic director Scott Wetherbee apologized and condemned Hernandez’s actions. South Alabama officials released a statement saying they have accepted Eastern Michigan’s apology.

Hernandez has spent five years at Eastern Michigan, playing four seasons, after transferring from Iowa Western Community College. The defensive back played in 11 games this season and is now out of college eligibility.

“In the spirit of the holidays, I ask for forgiveness from all who were directly or indirectly impacted by my negative decisions, especially from my team and those who have invested so much in my success,” Hernandez wrote.
